Our Garden

Back in May ,see this post, we put in a garden.  I planted watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes (cherry and regular size), peppers, carrots, cucumbers and corn.

It went from this

To this

It amazed me how small watermelons start out.  Unless you are really looking you can't see them until they are about the size of a baseball (at least I couldn't).
It began as an empty looking box and actually turned out food!  I wondered about the cantaloupes and watermelons.  People have told me they are really hard to grow because of our short summer season, but when it started to get warm in April I thought I'd try.....and it worked!  This summer was warm from the middle of April on and I know that is the only reason why it worked.  This cantaloupe took all that time to mature and it was perfect!    I'm still waiting to see if the melons get any bigger before I try them.

Even though I tried to plan for plant growth I learned things about where to plant next year.  The tomatoes took over the area where I planted cucumbers and peppers and shaded them too much.  So when I was done with the carrots I moved a pepper and cucumber plant to that area and hope they get enough sun to do something before it turns cold.

The one thing I've realized...it would take a TON of land to actually produce enough food to feed your family!!  Tomatoes and carrots work, but for the others you need to plant much more than I have room for.

It has been a fun project.
